Dermot Walsh (owner) bought the 350 acre site in 1976. The initial plan was to build one course and planning permission was successfully sought for a 300 van caravan park. Instead of developing the caravan park he decided to build two courses.

Eddie Hackett designed the first course Maheramagorgan in 1982. Construction did not begin until 11 years later in 1993, when all of the original sodding was replaced on greens, tees and fairways and are essentially as God made them. Eddie Hackett laid the last sod on the 16th hole in October 31st 1996 two months before he died and this was the last time he set foot on a golf course. Joanne O'Haire, the former Royal Co. Down assistant professional designed the 2nd course Trá Mór in 1993.

The first round was played in August 1994 by a father and son who were staying in the Carrigart Hotel (see photo below). St. Patrick's is still a pay and play facility patronised mainly by residents of the Carrigart Hotel.

In 2002, St.Patrick's asked the legendary architect Martin Hawtree ( probably the best links architect in the World ) to review both courses at St. Patrick's and to suggest any necessary adjustments or changes. The Hawtree team drew up a plan. Many of their suggestions for the Maheramagorgan course have been implemented and are reaching maturation. Included in the reviews section of this website are some comments of the report.
